The Grove was packed with screaming Bruno Mars fans who lined up early to catch the Hawaiian heartthrob perform a free set at the Los Angeles shopping center on Friday (Sept. 17).
The singer-songwriter crooned his way through a remix of B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You,” a mash-up of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Billie Jean,” and “Seven Nation Army,” “Just the Way You Are,” “Billionaire,” plus a new song from his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans called “Grenade.”
His producing partner Phil of The Smeezingtons was by his side for what only seems like the beginning of a thriving career.

Guess the coke charge made this song 'shoot up' the charts.

#1 in the UK. It will be interesting to see if he can actually shift units or if he'll be grouped in with the Jason DeRulo/Taio Cruz/Jay Sean bunch.

This is the most bland #1 since... I can't even recall a time.

I think his talent is deserving of the top.

It seems like he's reaching the top because people know he is talented. It doesn't seem like the average listener would catch onto it. This song offers nothing. It's like if "More to Life" by Stacie Orrico reached #1 in 2003.

Right? Everytime I mention Bruno Mars to someone, I have to follow-up with, he's the guy that sings the "Billionaire" chorus.

The song itself is very universal and it had enough hype. It's in the same line as "No One" or "Bleeding Love", just by a male artist.

Perhaps the lyrics are universal, but there's no way in hell Leona Lewis would spend 10 weeks at #1 with a song like this as a debut single.

It's like if "More to Life" by Stacie Orrico reached #1 in 2003. I'd have to disagree a bit on the Orrico comparison, although I guess I'm biased because I just think that's a better song. Anyway, I agree that this is too universal for its own good, but the average listener doesn't care. There's no edge or nothing distinctive whatsoever, but the listener just hears the nice melody and (sappy) lyrics and buys in. Plus, programmers were already inclined to play Bruno given his successes earlier in the year.

When I heard this song I had no idea who was singing it or where it came from but I fell in love with it immediately. The lyrics caught my attention first and the great feel the song has. Its just a great pop song with a great melody. Its simple and refreshing to hear and thats why it's such a huge hit. It stood out against all the other crap on pop radio and it's just a very genuine song. Makes me feel all warm inside.

This reminds me of when "Pieces of Me" hit #1 on pop radio! I'd call that song less bland, but it was so out of place considering the music trends.

This is overplayed now, but it's a well crafted Pop song with the best male vocalist we've had at Top 40 radio in years. I'm glad it did well.

This is definitely deserving. I am sick of it, but it's a great song by a good male vocalist with talent.
