Yeah I thought they were completely fine. The SNL audience was such a weird combination of people to begin with, German tourists, Brooklyn Hipsters who would never give them a fair chance, and jaded New Yorkers who are there ironically, and maybe 3 actual SNL fans like me.
I think their issue was the backing vocal track. It was really noticeable, especially in the chorus of "One Thing" at least in person. There was none in the verses obviously. I think people unfairly discredited them because it was a bit jarring and you could argue 5 singers shouldn't need one. Personally, I remember way back when I saw En Vogue perform "Free Your Mind" on SNL and it was amazing. Now that I'm older I know they probably used a well-disguised vocal track. You can't fault One Direction for doing the same. Unfortunately a good chunk of the audience did not share the same sentiment.
I still think it was a successful appearance for them though. Good for them.

Surprisingly, this latest crop of boy groups doesn't bother me at all. Strange, I'm obviously too old for this sh*t, but the songs are kind of cute.
I was totally in the correct age demo for the last wave of boy groups and detested all of them.
