Despite what the year-ending charts may say, it can certainly be debated that females made somewhat of a "comeback" in 2005... at least as far as the charts are concerned.
Will 2006 be the year that bands/groups make a comeback? I, for one, certainly hope so.
Just a few groups -- Rascal Flatts, Sugarland, and Lonestar -- seem to be a mainstay on the charts right now. And, at least for Lonestar, that is certainly up for discussion too. SheDaisy has indeed shown signs of being where they were a few years ago, but they can't seem to rattle off two straight "big" hits. Curb's lack of backing for Trick Pony has crushed them. Little Big Town, among others, has certainly shown potential with their hit "Boondocks", but what about the "promising" up-and-comers like Ryan Shupe & the Rubberband? or Cowboy Crush? or Hot Apple Pie? All of them were signed to major labels, only to be a major disappointment thus far.
Forgotten, however, are some of the great groups within the last five years that have come and gone. So many bands have unjustly lost their record deal... Rushlow, Emerson Drive, Sixwire, Ricochet, Pinmonkey, etc. Others from that same time frame -- such as Yankee Grey, River Road, the Sons of the Desert, Marshall Dyllon, and South 65 -- have simply disbanded.
Then there's the great groups from the 90's which have seemingly been forgotten by country radio. Could Diamond Rio, BlackHawk, (the new) Little Texas, Sawyer Brown, or Restless Heart possibly get a top 10 hit in '06?
Or will 2006 see a new group take the country music world by storm? Certainly someone like the PovertyNeck Hillbillies (www.povertyneck.com), Sum of Us (www.summusic.com), Hilljack (www.hilljack.com), the Drew Davis Band (www.drewdavisband.com), Last Man Standing (www.lastmanstandingnashville.com), One Mile South (www.onemilesouth.com), West of Nowhere (www.westofnowhere.com), or Shiloh (www.shilohtheband.com) are more than qualified to be signed by a major label.
I'd love to hear what others think.
