Underwhelming is definitely a good descriptor of this. Maybe it'll grow on me, but on the first two listens I'm not terribly impressed. I wouldn't call it bad, but I also agree that they're not really treading any new ground here. It's a shame because I really wanted to like this, also. Meteora had some good stuff on it.

Wow @ alternative. I think people might be excited they're back... It certainly bodes well for them, but Alternative sent big-name lead singles straight to the top (or at least near the top) on instant impact on numerous occasions in the last 12 months (RHCP, Pearl Jam, NIN, Audioslave) with varying degrees of success. So it's not that unusual, but I think this will be closer to "Dani California" in terms of longevity and kicking off a successful album era.
