ANGEL TRUMPS 'HEAVEN': There are two songs in the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 that weren't on the chart last week. In addition to "Control Myself" making a re-entry, former O-Town member Ashley Parker Angel makes his first solo appearance on the tally with "Let U Go" (Blackground), the Hot Shot Debut at No. 17.

That's the highest new entry of 2006. Just last week, Red Hot Chili Peppers tied the record set by Pink's "Stupid Girls" (LaFace) in February by debuting at No. 24.

Angel's debut at No. 17 marks the highest new entry on the Hot 100 since Bo Bice's "Inside Your Heaven" bowed at No. 2 the week of July 9, 2005.

Wait, wasn't Let U Go on the lower half Hot 100 a few weeks ago? Maybe it fell off, but I swear it was on, and could it be a Hot Shot Debut if it had already been on the chart?

It would have basically been impossible for this to chart. The only format playing it is pop and it's in the 40's there. Without a digital single, there's no way it would have had the 25 million or so audience impressions needed to chart.

Z100 is playing it in high rotation though, which helps its audience. I still swear I saw it around the 80s.

You might have been looking at the Pop 100 or Pop 100 Airplay...

It debuted on the Pop 100 at #82 on the April 15th chart.

Even though I'm not a big fan of this song, there's no excuse for it being #39 with only a double digit bullet. It's the highest debuting song of the year on the Hot 100.

Timing is everything. About five years back, Mark Wahlberg starred in a movie called Rock Star, in which a covers band lead singer becomes the frontman for his favorite heavy metal band. Overwhelmed by wanton excess and depravity, he eventually quits the band (mid-song!) and follows his muse. Flash forward a few years, and we find him grunged out in a Seattle bistro lip-syncing to a Verve Pipe song, waiting for A&R men to jump them bones.

About five years back, Ashley Parker Angel starred in an MTV reality show called "Making the Band", about a group called O-Town and their wacky adventures as the fabbest of pre-fab boy bands. Flash forward a few years, and X-Townie Angel (the group's Timberlake) is following his muse. He has longer hair, a guitar, a new MTV show, a new record deal, and a new Max Martin-penned single. Problem is, while Wahlberg's character enjoyed hindsight-aided prescience, this Ashley is late to MTV's pop-goes-punk reality-show party, and there isn't enough Gothic typeface in a hundred Hot Topic stores to toughen up his pretty-boy pout'n'shout. I still play "I'm Better" all the time. Love that song.

I think he should have stuck with it. He had the whole "Mr. Nice Guy" image going with the show. The song fits that image better. Plus, I sort of think it's a better song too.

With the album release, the single version started plummeting on iTunes and the album version is doing nothing. That's definitely something I'm not used to seeing.

I'm still hoping "I'm Better" gets released next. Because he might not even get three singles. And if he only gets two, "I'm Better" should be one of them.

I love this now, and I hated it at first even though I kept an open mind from the start. I hear this all the time on Z100 too, and on PST, and it really sounds like a hit. People seem to genuinely be interested in this song too. This song's chart run should be reversed with that damn Teddy Geiger song that radio has been trying to make stick since January to no real reaction from the public.
