Better 'Late' Than Never: Norah Preps New CD

Norah Jones will return Jan. 30 with her third studio album, "Not Too Late." The 13-track Blue Note set comprises songs all written or co-written by the artist. Production was handled by Jones' songwriting partner and bassist Lee Alexander; indie singer/songwriter M. Ward, Kronos Quartet cellist Jeff Ziegler and organist Larry Goldings make guest appearances.

"Not Too Late" is the follow-up to 2004's "Feels Like Home," which debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 4.3 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Jones has kept a lower profile than usual in 2006, guesting on the self-titled Ipecac album from Mike Patton's Peeping Tom project and recording a collaborative album with New York-based musician friends as the Little Willies.

I did like "Sunrise" though, just a little bit. I can't expect her to release anything that I'll love!

I like this. It has a gospel-ish vibe to it and the chords are interesting.

I like this well enough. It doesn't sound like a Hot AC hit to me at all. It should do fine at Triple A and Smooth Jazz. I like it more than any of her follow-up singles. I definitely don't like it as much as "Don't Know Why," but I'll see how it compares to "Sunrise" after awhile.

With more than 30 million records sold worldwide, it's easy to forget that pop-jazz phenomenon Norah Jones has released only two albums in her career. "Thinking of You," the first single from third set "Not Too Late" (out Jan. 30), is a slow, bluesy love song that sounds just like her other nostalgic, low-key ballads. Jones' smoky vocals sail dreamily over safe Wurlitzer chords, light brass and faux-jazz bass, but all she does is conjure a sea of easy listening. After a joyful, jammy disc with a side project called "The Little Willies," New York's premier piano chanteuse could have easily risked much more. Completely uneventful, this track is a perfect soundtrack to writing coffee shop novels. —Sven Philipp
