Written by Mariah and Diane Warren, this was the third single (with "Crybaby" as a double A-side) from Mariah's ninth album, Rainbow. The single was released during a period, in which Mariah and her then record label, Sony, were in a heated dispute. Sony refused to shell out the money to promote the song, so Mariah scrounged up the money herself and shot the video. She held a video contest for fans, and the five winning videos got shown during the intro of Carey's own music video. Things looked like they were going her way, but Carey had to face yet another obstacle after the song's release. Because "Crybaby" (the other song on the double A single) was gaining more airplay at the time, Billboard magazine stipulated that "Can't Take That Away" was ineligible to chart on the Hot 100, and gave credit to the other song. This crushed Carey's plan of having "Can't Take That Away" chart on the Hot 100 while "Crybaby" chart on the R&B chart simultaneously. Nevertheless, "Crybaby" peaked at #28 on the Hot 100, becoming Carey's lowest charting single up to that point in time. This event marked the beginning of Carey's spiral into the realm of failure, which she would not escape until years later.

I thought it was sappy back then, but I recently started to appreciate it.

This song is horrific. Every time Mariah gets all militant to get the fans to fight her label for her preferred single choices, she's fighting for some pile of crap.

I like the melody.
The cheese facor is high, but I can get past it. It can be a beautiful ballad when it wants to be.

I like it. She feels what she's singing, not like "Hero".
CTTA > Hero > TTR

This song is terrible! It had flop written all over it. Not only did it feature fifth-grade lyrics, it was horribly produced. And her voice back then was not strong enough to pull off a ballad like this.
At the time, I considered this her worst single... But she managed to release far crappier ones over the following five years.

Didn't she also fight for "Fantasy"? I remember her saying something about how the label was like WTF when she presented the song to them for the first time.

i don't know if that's true..if it is then that's basically the ONLY time where she chose a great song.

That was when she recorded the Bad Boy remix, not the album version. Mariah's biggest battles to get her way have been for "Can't Take That Away," "Boy (I Need You)," and "Shake It Off".

LMAO. I'd probably rank them like this.
1. Shake It Off 2. Can't Take That Away 3. Boy (I Need You)

This song sucks. So does Crybaby. As much as they sound dated now, How Much/X-Girlfriend should've been the single.

I am not ashamed to say I love this. I agree it should not have been a single, they should have released How Much / X-Girlfriend and then maybe this as the final single since she wanted it so much

She also cries in the video! It's kinda emotional seeing those tears flowing down her face as she watches those videos on the TV. And I can't believe Sony wanted to end the Rainbow era after just 2 singles, both of which hit #1. I could see why she was so passionately fighting for a 3rd single; even though she didn't pick the best one.
