I think this song is absolutely gorgeous. I love the more upbeat, funky Beck stuff, but I've found myself drawn far more to tracks like this and "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes" (eventhough it was a cover) than I am to the former. And I think that the way he incorporates major chords and typically positive-sounding instrumentals with heavier, bleaker and more disparate lyrical content is brilliant. By the end of this song, it sounds like he's giving up, not just ending the song, but giving everything up and giving up on life. But it ends on a major arpeggio. It's such an awkward juxtaposition because it's sad, relatable, confusing and uplifting all at the same time.
I guess that's why I love it (and many songs from this album). It's one of my favorite Beck songs and probably always will be.

Good song. I agree, it's a shame his more serious work tends to be overlooked in favor of his more upbeat/quirky stuff. Mutations and Sea Change are both really strong records.
My favorite song in his more serious vein is probably "Nobody's Fault But My Own" though.
