Fame" was a pop song, released in 1980 and made popular as the theme song to the Fame movie and TV series. The song was performed by Irene Cara, who played the role of Coco Hernandez in the original movie. Fame rose to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1980. The song was not released in the United Kingdom until 1982, so it would coincide with the UK premiere of the Fame television series. It hit #1 for three weeks. This is cheesy as hell, but it's such a guilty pleasure for me! I love it!

To me, this sounds INCREDIBLY dated...especially the synthesized-bell-sounding things. I remember when I was in like 6th grade I bought "Billboard Top Dance Hits 1980" because I liked "Funkytown" a lot (haha), and this was on the compilation (as well as "Call Me") so I ended up listening to it quite a bit. Then I rented the movie/musical from 1980...and thought it was fantastic.
I think when I was watching some documentary on the movie on Vh1 like, 8 years ago, I heard that the guy who played the electronic-dork-techie Bruno might have actually had a hand in this, but I don't know for sure.

This is much better than "Flashdance." But both are mediocre.

Soundtrack queen!
I love this, but "Flashdance" was better.
