I'm not really sure where this should go, since it was a big time Pop, Urban, and Disco smash in the US in 1976. Maxine was British, but had more success stateside with this single and subsequent album of the same name.
It's overplayed to this day, but I still like it. It's also huge in those montages of poor people moving up the social ladder in movies.

It's one of those songs that's such a cheese classic that I'd never actually turn it on. It is catchy though. It always sounded older than the 70's to me. It's like a dated song that was dated to begin with. Sinitta had a minor hit with a dance cover in the late 80's.

Sinitta, however, had a HUGE hit with the song, peaking at No. 4 and staying for a while in the Top 40. I don't know what country you're referring to, but here in the US, Sinitta's version peaked somewhere in the 80's.
