Songs don't come much more depressing sounding than this one, but it's still beautiful IMO. One of those rare remakes that completely trumps the original. Very well used in Donnie Darko.

Loved this at the time- still do now.
Was the UK's Christmas #1 for 2003 which was quite surprising considering it beat the Pop Idol effort and other seasonal tracks.. mainly so surprising because of it's depressing tone. However, I guess it brings out the other side of Christmas that most of us don't see. It can be a depressing time of year for some!

I only like it when I'm watching Donnie Darko. I recently heard it on some commerical for a videogame and it sounded lame.

I love it! I don't get the Christmas connection though It was UK Christmas #1 in 2003. It kinda came from no-where to beat out naff, hype-based, critics band of the moment the Darkness to number one. To me it represents Christmas in that it's a time when we take a break from the "mad world" and think of those who can't.

I wonder if that's because of the commercial it's being featured in.

#11 iTunes.... they should re-release this but the song is SO old that it makes no sense even though it makes sense.

This song keeps randomly reappearing for like 2 months and then disappearing for a couple of years.
