I thought there was already a thread for this, but maybe it was deleted because it was thought to be a rumor.
Anyway, it's definitely on the album, and Essence called it "AMAZING."
Should be interesting...I hope she keeps the gospel choir. I can't imagine Tricky Stewart producing this (but he produced the whole record)!

So this will be a remake of the 80s classic? I LOVE that song.

Yea, the NY Post first reported it back in April, just after Easter.

Mariah said that a song reminded of Music Box, maybe it's this one

The whole first verse is whispered. There's a choir. Production-wise this reminded Hong Kong fans of Through The Rain and Bringing On The Heartache. Yikes.

It has to be good, I am sure she only recorded this to get a hit in Europe

Cover songs aren't even big in Europe anymore, though. I'm sure a lot of fans twittered her about missing her covers (god knows why - they also told her to release BINY), so she took it to heart and found one she liked.
I also think when everyone told her they wanted more Butterfly, she went in and made an album similar to Butterfly...whether it's still that album or not, who knows. She's also still in denial about people disliking her "whisper" voice, so I'm sure when she thinks of Butterfly, she thinks of the vocal techniques. I love Butterfly, but the one thing that pisses me off about it is her mumbling all of the verses on pretty much every song except the ones that were recorded earlier in the process (My All, Whenever You Call). I mean, imagine how much hotter Breakdown would sound with full vocals? I can't listen to the album version of "Close My Eyes" without thinking of how great it was when she performed it in full voice on Rosie. Same goes for "That Chick" on record and when she performed it for that silly MTV Hills premiere.
The only time her whisper voice truly sounds good (in my opinion) is when it's on top of a piano and only a piano ("I Wish You Well"), otherwise it just gets lost in all of the production.

My All was the last song she recorded for the album
And I disagree about whispering, I don't find it bad at all as long as it is the "rich" whispering she did on the Butterfly album and not that flat mess she did on Charmbracelet. As long as her voice is in good condition, she can pull it off with no problem. And I think she changes for fuller vocals because whispering on live performances doesn't work as it works in the studio, sounds like the mic is too low

Even if we haven't heard this yet, it definitely should be an international single, since it'll sound more like a traditional ballad, and I think that H.A.T.E.U is too urban.

There was a listening session today in London and people in attendance called this the highlight and was the only song praised.

Haha I knew it. The reviews in the US loved the R&B song HATEU, while the UK liked the pop cover.

Hate U was played but completely ignored, and a few people talked about Candy Bling

Yeah, surprisingly this got the best reception. So did Candy Bling - which I find weird if it's a slow jam.

This is getting A LOT of praises, which gives me flashbacks to the "Bye Bye" reviews. Hopefully, it'll be an amazing song though.

This is probably going to be the second worldwide single

This is probably going to be the second worldwide single WHY? I can understand releasing a cover as an album-closing single, but as the one to be out when the album hits stores? Seriously?

Because it's the best option to sell the album in markets that accept Mariah doing AC songs better than her urban songs

And it's probably the only AC song on the album.

Second single?
Mariah Carey is entering foreign territory with her new single.
The diva will release “I Want to Know What Love Is” as the next single off Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. The song is a cover of the 1984 hit by British-American rock band Foreigner.
SHOWBIZ 411’s Roger Friedman offered praise after getting a sneak peek at the album. “Mariah’s got a hit on her hands along the lines of Emancipation of Mimi,” he wrote. “The hour-long CD is ballad-centric. Written and produced with The-Dream and Tricky [Stewart], Memoirs boasts a lot of singles.”
Carey will release her twelfth studio album on September 29 featuring the tracks “Betcha,” “Obsessed,” “H.A.T.E.U.,” “Candy Bling,” “Ribbon,” “Standing Os,” “Impossible,” “It’s a Wrap,” “Inseparable,” “Up Out My Face,” “More Than Just Friends,” and “Angels Cry.”

this might turn into a disaster, a cover as a the 2nd single? Yeah, even though it's hard to tell without hearing the song, it sounds like a bad idea (at least stateside). I have a feeling it's still up in the air, though, especially since Mariah is STILL doing new tracks (confirmed today by her publicist). I think it's the tentative single because it was so well recieved, but that was in Europe, where they didn't even hear the over half of the album (from which all of Friedman's highlights came). I think that if they want to go with a big ballad in the U.S., it should be original...and it sounds like she has at least one more big old school ballad ("Angels Cry").

Would people in the US even realize this is a cover if she changes the production. Other than a few older people its not really that popular of a song anyways. So does it really even matter if its a cover?

I reckon it's a very recognizable song, and it's actually pretty popular as a recurrent (it finished in the Top 25 Hot AC year-end recurrent chart three times this decade). It would take a lot more than changing the production to make it unrecognizable.

I recognize the song, and I barely listen to AC stations. It's a pretty popular melody. BUT I think MC can really get a hit with this one. There haven't been any big ballads this year, and if this is launched in the fall, it'll be perfect timing for one.
