Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie planned to organize a re-recording of "We Are the World" on January 28, 2010 — the 25th anniversary of the original recording of the song. However, due to the devastation caused by the magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake in Haiti in January 2010, these plans were postponed. The new version was recorded on February 1, 2010, and it will benefit the impoverished country. Smokey Robinson took part in the original recording, and stated that no one who appeared on the 1985 version will be returning for the update. It will feature production by popular producers RedOne and Will.i.am. Some of the artists in the 100-member choir are: Pink, Lil Wayne, Eminem, AR Rahman, Kanye West, Jonas Brothers, LL Cool J, Robin Thicke, Celine Dion, Akon, Rob Thomas, Wyclef Jean, Jeff Bridges, Vince Vaughn, (wtf?) Barbra Streisand, Jordin Sparks, Good Charlotte's Madden brothers, Tony Bennett, Josh Groban, Snoop Dogg, Steve Saville, Jennifer Hudson, Britney Spears, Keri Hilson, Jamie Foxx, Tyrese, Katharine McPhee, Sean Garrett, Will.i.am, Brandy, Carlos Santana, Melanie Fiona, Enrique Iglesias, Toni Braxton, Cameron Bell, Jason Mraz, Miley Cyrus, Busta Rhymes, Nicole Scherzinger, Justin Bieber, Nicole Richie, Jay-Z, Usher, Julianne Hough, Raphael Saadiq, Zac Brown Band, India.Arie, Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Randy Jackson, Musiq Soulchild, Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson, Fonzworth Bentley, Kid Cudi, Iyaz, Lady Gaga, Bizzy Bone, Nipsey Hussle, the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, Trey Songz, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Sharbel N. Karam, Mya, Gladys Knight. [ It has also just been confirmed that Janet Jackson will be recording her brother Michael's lines from the song. The song will premiere Friday, February 12, during the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Nice selection across multiple genres and generations. Vince Vaughn is weird, but he must be taking over the Dan Akroyd role.

Lil' Wayne will be doing Bob Dylan's part, Celine Dion will be doing Cyndi Lauper's part, and Justin Bieber is doing the opening line. Pink and Jason Derulo are on it in addition to the list above. They showed footage from the recording studio on TV just now- Ciara, Joe jonas, Akon, and Barbra Streisand swining with their arms on each other while they sing. Seems like the twilight zone.

They should've recorded something new. The original shouldn't be redone, IMO.

Lady Gaga Explains Her Absence From 'We Are The World' Recording Singer, in rehearsal for new tour, says she was 'never supposed to' be at session even though her name was attached.
By Jocelyn Vena
While a number of the names attached to the "We Are the World" remake lent their voices to the charity single benefiting Haiti, a few notables were absent from the roster, including Lady Gaga. The Grammy-winning pop singer explains that while some media reports linked her to the "We Are the World" project, she had never planned on being involved with it.
"I've actually been in rehearsal for my new tour, but I was never supposed to do 'We Are the World.' So that's a rumor," Lady Gaga told "Access Hollywood." "I believe that they may have asked, yes, about it, but I was unable to do it."
But Gaga is quick to point out that just because she didn't get involved with "We Are the World" doesn't mean she hasn't done her part for the nation. "I've been working on my own charity projects for Haiti," she explained. "We've raised over half a million dollars for Haiti already and we like to work specifically with charities that are based in Haiti itself."
Most notably, Gaga donated all proceeds from her Radio City gig in New York on January 24, as well as a day's sales of merchandise on her Web site, to Haiti relief, totaling $500,000. "I donated all of the proceeds from one show worth of ticket sales as well as all of the merchandise from that show and for 24 hours we had a 'Gaga for Haiti' day where everything that was bought on the Web site ... every dollar went to Haiti," she said. "We're continuing to work on more projects and we're supposed to go to Haiti later this year for a show, which is very exciting."
On Monday night, when the "We Are the World" single was being recorded, Randy Phillips, the CEO of AEG Live and Lionel Richie's manager, discussed Gaga's absence. "That was one of the few disappointments because I think she's one of the greatest new stars we have," said Phillips, who helped organize the session. "If I have one regret, it's that she didn't come and do this. But you have to understand that this is a daunting thing when you think about what this was going to be. It's hard to tell people what it is until they see it and experience it. They had issues on the last one. Bruce Springsteen was right at the last minute and that really gave it credibility and Dylan came in and stuff like that."
Although he didn't know the exact reasons for her absence at the time, he did note that she had been involved with Haiti relief on her own, saying, "She's involved with Haiti. She's done other things for Haiti. But to be honest with you, I really don't know."

This is such a stupid and tacky idea IMO. I absolutely died laughing at EW's description though.
Dozens of talented celebrities... and Katharine McPhee, unite to remake "We Are The World."

They should've recorded something new. The original shouldn't be redone, IMO. Agree. Especially when the talent pool is so much shallower for this version than for the original version. Kind of a fukkn mess if you ask me.

Lil Wayne Put His 'Stamp' On 'We Are The World,' Director Paul Haggis Says
'You don't expect Lil Wayne to be singing like this,' he says of Weezy tackling Bob Dylan's verse from the original.
By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Eric Ditzian
Lil Wayne might be a multiplatinum hip-hop superstar, but the MC had some big shoes to fill when he was chosen to take on Bob Dylan's verse for the "We Are the World" remake. Their styles might be different, but Paul Haggis, the charity single's video director, said the Cash Money rapper held his own.
"They each put their own distinctive stamp on it," Haggis, who wrote and directed the Oscar-winning film "Crash," told MTV News. "So say he did the Bob Dylan part — well, those are lines Bob Dylan did, and no one can ever sing them like him again. But when Lil Wayne sings them, you'll never imagine someone else singing them [either]."
Lil Wayne was initially perplexed to be given Dylan's verse. "I was like, 'You guys are real good comedians,' " he laughed at the recording session. "After I did Bob Dylan's part, it kind of hit me that I guess this is way more important than I could ever imagine."
Wayne said the opportunity to be involved in such a major undertaking is something his children can hold on to forever. As for his mother, he chuckled when he said that all she asked was that he get Gladys Knight's photo for her. "I'm still overwhelmed," Weezy said, looking around the room at the galaxy of stars that ranged from Pink and Carlos Santana to Usher and Barbra Streisand. "I was like, 'Where do I fit in?' I thought my name got mixed up."
The new twist on the 25-year-old anthem has a decidedly different slant, with a number of rappers participating on the track.
Haggis at first joked that Wayne sang his verse just like Dylan. "Very much like Bob," he quipped. But the director said the sum of the parts on the remake will be just as inspiring as the original.
"The great thing about working with so many people, " Haggis said, "these artists of this caliber, where you know them from this type of music or that, but when they really come together to sing this type of song, you don't expect Lil Wayne to be singing like this or Pink to be singing like that, or even Tony Bennett to be singing like that or Barbara [Streisand]. It was wonderful how they all morphed together."

LMFAO @ Wyclef OMG @ Wayne and T-Pain's parts with the auto-tune LMFAO ...LOL Akon has such a horrible voice... they showed a behind the scenes clip the other night on ET and without the studio magic, it just showed Akon singing into the mic, he is so bad. Justin Bieber kicking it off? wtf The rap part is sooooo BAD Nicole Scherzinger?? LMAO where did she come from... Pink sounded great and I need new Adam Levine/Maroon5 music, he sounded good too Jennifer Hudson is such an incredible talent...it's funny to think she was voted off 7th in her season of American Idol, and now how successful she has become. It's funny to think she was "discovered" on Idol as well. That show did find quite a few of our major stars.
