The lead single from her untitled third album will be available on iTunes May 11.
“I just feel like ‘XXXO’—it is what it is,” she told Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1. “It’s kinda [about] being disconnected in L.A. and not having cell phone service or just not being able to kinda leave there for 18 months.”
While she does not appear in her controversial video for “Born Free,” which has been banned from YouTube, she will soon go in front of the lens to shoot the visuals for “XXXO” with famed director Hype Williams.

Wow this is a hit. If she put a rapper on it, this would be huge.

M.I.A. shows her true colors on the angry love letter “XXXO,” the first single from her as-yet-untitled third album, due July 6. The Brit laments about her overbearing boyfriend who’s “tweeting [her] like Tweety Bird on [his] iPhone” over the electro-pop production.
“You want me to be somebody who I’m really not,” the chorus repeats as M.I.A. gives him the cold shoulder. Ouch.
THIS IS HOTTTTT

Wow this is a hit. If she put a rapper on it, this would be huge. Kanye would be perfect, or Drake.

I actually don't like this as much as I thought I would. It's not bad though.
It would sound good with a rapper somewhere. Definitely not Drake though.

I honestly can't decide whether or not I like this. The opening verse is almost unlistenable, but once the chorus opens up it's more enjoyable...but I'm not sure if it's because I actually like it or if it's just less painful than the verse. The production is interesting, but again I'm not sure if I actually like it or if it's just interesting because it's different from everything else on radio.

Her voice is so horrible to listen to. Annoying On the contrary, I think the mixing down of her songs has gotten better with time. If you listen to 'Arular', it was so glitchy and loud compared to "XXXO". There's actually depth and dimension to this song rather than the production that was on the first album, which sounds like it was produced on a Fisher Price keyboard.

I don't "get" her. This is alright, I guess.

I loved both Arular and Kala. I can't stand this or Born Free.

This is a lot more commercial sounding than I would have expected, but it doesn't do much for me as of now.

I'm a huge M.I.A. fan. I loved Arular and especially Kala, and had the opportunity to interview her back in 2008 before she put on a relatively huge show (5,000 people) - especially considering that Paper Planes still hadn't gone to radio - for our public radio/college station in New Orleans. She was awesome.
I thought "Born Free" was alright, but this is really disappointing for a first official single, IMO. I'm all for her singing (my favorite tracks are the ones in which she sings), but not when the songwriting is so mediocre! She's such a clever lyricist, but these lyrics are pretty lame...not to mention that the melody is also pretty forgettable and verges on annoying.

I hate the fact that people think you're supposed to say something profound every time a song comes out. Have fun with the track and wait for the album.
