Katy also said that she’s penned a song with Max Martin and Dr. Luke called “Californian Girl”, which is her official answer to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys NYC anthem “Empire State of Mind”.
“It’s so great that ‘Empire State of Mind’ is huge and that everyone has the New York song, but what the f**k? What about L.A.? What about California?
“It’s been a minute since we had a California song and especially from a girl’s perspective. We took the references of Prince, which is always a great reference, and some of the 90’s, almost house music references.”

Pink released a song about L.A. back in 2006.

Hum...I don't remember anything from the I'm Not Dead era being about California. There was a song called "Gone To California" on Missundaztood but I haven't listened to it in years.
Anyway, I don't like the word "Californian". It doesn't roll off the tongue very nicely.
The Beach Boys and David Lee Roth had a song called "California Girls" which was great.

Nothing confirmed yet, but this is rumoured to be the first single from Katy's new album, and they supposedly shot the video today.

The song is another Max Martin/Dr Luke production, who are the same duo that launched Perry to pops A-list back in 2008 with her #1 hit “I Kissed a Girl”.
Last month the singer spoke about the song in an interview with Rolling Stone, stating that it was L.A.’s answer to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys NYC anthem “Empire State of Mind”.
The song also gets an injection of authenticity with a feature from West Coast rapper Snoop Dogg. Katy will perform the new single on June 20 at the Much Music Video Awards in Canada.

Gurls? lol
The timing is perfect. With Christina underperforming on Pop radio, this should have smooth sailing to Top 10.

Yes, and based on the description, the sound is going to be perfect for summer and a great fit for Pop radio at the moment. I can't wait to hear it, hopefully it doesn't disappoint.
I think this could end up being one of the big songs of summer this year.

There's definitely anticipation for her return, even though that collabo with Timbaland flopped. I was listening to her debut album the other day. I forgot how much I enjoyed that album.

I wonder why this isn't listed as featuring Snoop Dogg on All Access or FMQB.

USA Today gave the song a positive review:
"Potential single California Girls, with Snoop Dogg, is an effervescent toast to summer fun"
Katy tweeted last night:
Having a dance party in car right now in Times Square dancing 2 my song California Gurls... We're gonna have so much fun this summer! Gahhh!

This has everything necessary to be a huge hit without out even hearing it. Rapper? Check! Misspelling? Check! Reference to California? Check. I bet it samples something.

Does reference directly mean sample?

Maybe, but does it really matter...even if it doesn't "officially" sample something, it's going to sound like some Prince or 90's house song anyway.

Lyrics:
Sun kissin' so hot will melt your popsicle. oh oh oh oh oh Cali boys & girls, we're undeniable. FINE, fresh, Fierce we got it on lock! West coast represent, now put your hands UP! oh oh oh oh oh
Sounds like a sing-song SMASH

A clip leaked. It sounds like Ke$ha. But it also reminds me of Madonna.

Definitely some Madonna/Cyndi Lauper/Ke$ha influence.
I was listening along and almost started singing "TiK ToK". Looks like Martin tweaked the beat of "TiK ToK" to create this song.

Prince my-ass. This is a straight up Daft Punk rip-off. I really like a lot of her songs, but this doesn't sound like a hit .

Doesn't sound 90s or Prince at all, but I do hear the house. Sounds like all of the artists mentioned here. If "Holiday", "Tik Tok", "Digital Love", and "Around the World" were mashed together, this would be it.

Ya, this is an obvious hit. Everything about the chorus is structured to make it an anthem.
That said, I'm not entirely sure I loved it. I need to hear it in HQ.
