So the song that was merely featured in a commercial for the Superbowl is holding up better on iTunes than this? Pathetic.

Every time I hear that line "We can drink some wine, burgundy is fine," I literally cringe. One of the worst lyrics I've heard in quite some time. Could she really not brainstorm a better rhyme?
As for the song overall, I'll tentatively give it a C, but that could easily fall to a D if it sticks around and gets overplayed at radio. The chanting/spelling is so immature, and when you listen to this back-to-back with "Vogue," "Like A Prayer" or one of her other classics...there's simply no comparison.

here's what she said about the whole MIA thing:
oh madonna please...she's full of sh*t and botox. If it were someone more popular like Lady Gaga she would say it was "artistic" and that "it reminds her of a young madonna" as her narcissistic self always says but because MIA is not well known madge wasn't ready to be overshadowed by a "nobody".

LMAO @ her response. She's correct that it was a "teenager" and "irrelevant" gesture, but for her - the QUEEN of stunts like this - of all people to be criticizing M.I.A? A very similar one that immediately springs to mind is the infamous Letterman appearance where she kept dropping the F-bomb. Madonna looks like a b*tch for not backing M.I.A.
And Paul, I absolutely LOVE when you (and others) derisively throw the word "artistic" around while discussing GaGa, Madonna, Christina and all these other jokers. Never fails to crack me up.

As much as I believe pop music is pop music, I must back Madonna and Gaga here. They have much more artistic control than you're average pop music hack. It's not like we're talking about Britney Spears here.

I think this whole thing is ridiculous, it was just a middle finger! But, in her defense, the NFL was explicit with her, no controversy. And she was explicit in all of her interviews preceding the performance, there would be no controversy. And then MIA pulled her stunt and Madge got a little egg on her face. I can see why she's annoyed.
And I agree, the stunt took attention AWAY from Madonna, which is probably what she's really pissed about, lmao.

Here's what she said on Carson Daly. 923now.radio.com/2012/02/10/madonna-talks-super-bowl-m-i-a-apology-and-new-album-with-carson-daly/I was up in the bleachers doing my pom pom routine. I was oblivious. In fact, I didn’t really know about it until after I had come backstage and changed and came out to finish watching the football game…I was surprised, nobody knew about it. She surprised us all. I like her and you know I believe in people having individuality and I like her punk rock attitude. Actually I think she’s really cool and that’s why I asked her to be in my show and be on my record. But I didn’t think that was the time or the place for it, to tell you the truth. That’s the unfortunate thing and we were really careful to be super honest and the NFL was super honest with us about what we could and couldn’t do and I had no interest in rocking the boat or doing anything to offend anybody. We were all clear on that and it was a joyous evening…not the place for it. It felt like a negative note, you know what I mean? And apparently MIA apologized: Yeah, yeah. She has. I know she feels bad…I accept her apology, but you know, I think she still has her head in the sand right now. I’m not sure.

Madonna looks like a b*tch for not backing M.I.A. I agree but I also think there's more to it. So much work and money has gone into winning the American public back over this time. Madonna's handlers are NOT going to let her throw it all away by being tied to a controversial movement. I'm sure Madonna's publicist, record label head, etc etc etc told her exactly how to handle it. It's no coincidence that she waited a few days to give her first interview. I'm sure those days were spent calculating how to approach it.

I hear you and I can understand Madonna's (or her handlers', whatever) resentment on that level. The main reason it rubs me the wrong way is that it's coming from someone who has literally grounded her career in "rebellious" stunts just like M.I.A.'s. I'd expect a different level of empathy from her. If you substituted Madonna with someone like Mariah or Beyonce, it wouldn't seem so hypocritical.

I see that too. Plus, Madonna recruited M.I.A. for her song and then throws her under the bus. In all fairness, I doubt M.I.A. was expecting this whole incident to be... an incident.

LOL. She should honestly be happy that she made it to Top 10. This now extends her record of having the most Top 10s of any artist on the Hot 100 to 38.

Eek...down to #32 on iTunes, and most of the Whitney and Grammy material has fallen below her now It will be interesting to see how/if airplay rebounds. If not, Madonna might have her very own "Not Myself Tonight."

What a waste on the most extensive promo I've ever seen for a single. To think of how much they put into making this a hit and it's going to fall like a brick after two weeks. Did they even bother doing test research before selecting such a bland song as a lead single?

When this leaked a few months ago no one liked it. I don't know what she/Interscope was thinking. Though I bet this is more her fault than the record company.
