Third single in the US from "21." Goes for adds next month.
Excellent choice. I'm glad they didn't go with another ballad.

YES. I'm glad they went with this, its catchier and fresher to me than "SFTTR."
Although that should definitely be the next single.

I adore SFTTR, but this is a great song and probably a better choice in the US.
That said, I'm not looking forward to the multitude of comments (hopefully some of which will be jokes) about how "rumour" is spelled wrong.

Not the right choice. Good song, but not too radio friendly. "Set Fire to the Rain" would solidify her as pop staple.

She'll never be a pop staple, she's not a pop artist. She's basically a worldwide movement at this point, unbelievable hype and goodwill. But it's a moment, it won't last.
Pop radio is not gonna keep playing her AC tracks unless that's the new direction of pop radio. This is just as radio-friendly as "SFTTR" and has just as big a chance of being a hit or under-performing for that matter.
She's one single away from pop being hesitant with her material from this album. Could be this, could be one of the next singles.

I agree with everything you said. I'm pretty much expecting her career at Pop radio to follow a similar path to Leona Lewis although I think Adele is a million miles more talented than Leona.
"Rumour Has It" was one of my favorite songs on the album upon first listen and I'm thrilled it will be the next single. I wish her continued success!

Either way, "Set Fire to the Rain" is a Top 5 hit. "Rumor Has It" will fizzle out in the teens.
I don't see her Adele as a Leona Lewis, though. Lewis will always be remembered for her monster hit. Adele clearly has two under her belt and the potential for more. She feels more like how Jewel felt in the 90's.

I agree. not to take credit away from Adele of course, but SLY is huge(in the US) basically because of hype and so is her success in the US. It all started with her performance at the Brits.

I think releasing another mournful love-song would be a mistake, people can only handle so many of those in a row. Everyone I know is at their ropes end with "SLY." This is sassy and in your face, a change of pace.
And Adele is far better than Leona Lewis, lol. I think this era is more comparable to Alanis Morisette's JLP, not musically of course. But the fact that she's a female phenomena, hugely successful and getting songs played at pop radio that pop usually doesn't play.

well she's "only" had two hits...so did Leona(BL was huge ..and BIT was a hit..not as big as SLY or RITD but still)...Alanis had many hits from JLP.

If they play it right, Adele has the potential for a lot more hits. Lewis just had stock of boring ballads. This does feel like a bit like Morissette, with both of their albums receiving so much praise in their respective times.

From a personal standpoint, I hate this song. I love "Set Fire to the Rain." I would have preferred SFTTR as the next single.
From a business standpoint, I think this may be a wise move, but maybe not. I think "SFTTR" would be better for her in the short term. It's a fan favorite, very catchy, and has already been selling very well with no promotion. It would be a bigger hit.
But "Rumour Has It" is a change of pace with her. It will help her avoid being seen as this decade's Celine Dion (only releasing slow paced love/break up ballads).

"Set Fire to the Rain" is hardly a ballad. It feels like more of a midtempo. It has such an excellent sound for radio and is the clear choice for the third single.

But it does sound very AC and has the same subject matter as her current single.

Fourth single. Going for adds mid-march.
I think this will be another number one.

Upbeat Adele just in time for the summer. This is a lot closer to "Rolling in the Deep" than the past two singles and people will appreciate the change of pace. She's still selling tons of albums and singles. I think this would have flopped as a second or maybe even third single, but she's perfectly positioned to take anything to the top.

I think this will go #1 on the Hot 100 for at least week. I think it will fumble a tidbit on pop radio, but not enough to call it a flop.

This is one of the best-managed album eras of the past decade. The single choices, timing, promo and long-term strategy have all been absolutely perfect. Watch and learn, Team Rihanna...

This is the right choice for the 4th single. I was all on board with having SFTTR as No. 3. I'm glad they made the switch. But I agree with what everyone said above. This is a nice change-of-pace and the biggest obvious hit left on the album. I think it'll do well. I don't know that it'll get to #1 on the hot 100 ... single sales may lag a bit, that's only natural ... but all formats will be all over this and should keep the album selling into the summer. Diamond, here we come.
