It doesn't sound overtly political to me.
Certainly not like Pink's 'Dear Mr. President' or whatever it's called.
Reads like a typically windy, stream of consciousness Sheryl Crow song.

I LOVE this. The chorus is great.

No surprised there. It sounds like songs that you usually like.

This is really good in full, but I can't even see this being a Top 10 hit at Hot AC.

The verses are kind of catchy. This is solid. Not really one of my favorites singles by her, but I like it. The production and the vocals are really good.

I like it, but I'm not amazed. I'm glad she's going for a slightly rawer sound musically and vocally though.

This still doesn't have a single spin at HAC.
I wasn't expecting this to take off fast there, but new Sheryl music not even having ONE spin after a full week is crazy.

Yeah, I was about to comment the same thing. They still have three months to promote the album, so I think they'll release the second single before the album release.

This is a really nice surprise. I never expected such a return to form, but this really could be on any of her first three albums. I'd take her raw, husky vocals any day over the processed, high, and nasal ones that characterized pretty much everything she has done since Globe Sessions.

Hello, this is a Sheryl Crow song. No HAC spins yet? Wow.

Maybe promos haven't been sent out to the format yet? I was able to purchase it from Amazon, though, so that would be quite odd.
While I'm not crazy about how overtly political this song is, I do really enjoy it. Her annunciation and vocals in the verses really remind me of the way she sang on "All I Wanna Do," and "Can't Cry Anymore," and the chorus is sung very similarly to "Leaving Las Vegas." I'm not sure how well it will do because of it's message, though; it certainly stands no chance of being a hit on pop.

it certainly stands no chance of being a hit on pop. Yeah. I don't think they are going to release any song from this album to Pop radio, unless it's a massive ballad or a huge download hit. I also think the life of this single will be short. I can see them releasing the second single in January, they should do that.

This is probably just the "heater" single for AAA anyway. There's no way they wouldn't even send a lead Sheryl single for HAC adds. People a lot more washed up than her still do.
I bet there will be another "first" single.

Why did you choose "Shine Over Babylon" as your first single?
Actually, this isn't technically the first single. The record business has changed so drastically -- it's like the Wild West out here -- that the game plan was to get out as much music before the album came out as possible, so people could hear it. This was the first one that I felt should come out because it really speaks to the tone of the record and for me, it has a lot of impact as to what's going on right now. We're going to follow it with three more songs with video on YouTube in the upcoming week.
YouTube, huh? Do people even bother with television now?
As far as I know, MTV and VH1 don't play music videos any more; it's all reality TV and game shows, so I don't know if they'll really pick up a video. To me, it's an interesting time because you used to make a video for a million dollars with a great director. Now, you spend $10,000, if that, with no hair and make-up, and do it completely guerrilla style. For example, we did a song called "God Bless This Mess" about the war and we shot it in front of the White House and nobody stopped us. It's really really exciting to just go out and shoot, like how Bob Dylan shot "Don't Look Back" -- it's just a guy with a camera and you're performing the song.
