I find her success in France fascinating. Is she even successful at all in Australia, or only France?
She was one of Australia's biggest local music stars!
Tina's career has spanned 3 decades, since she was a child star on tv show young talent time. In 1990 Tina released her debut album "Strong As Steel" on an independant record lable, Avenue records. The album yielded the ARIA #3 hit "I Need Your Body".
In the early 90's Tina signed to Sony/Columbia. Her debut on the label (which she refers to as her debut album, and doesn't acknowledge SAS) was her 1994 album "Don't Ask". This album was a MEGA hit in Australia, and went on to become the biggest selling album of 1994 according to ARIA's end of year chart for that year, going 9x platinum. The album spawned a number of local hit singles including "Chains", "Sorrento Moon", "Heaven Help My Heart", "Wasn't It Good" and "That's The Way A Woman Feels". Tina had an extensive Australian tour to support the album! Tina also had a mild success with "Don't Ask" in the UK, where "Chains" went top ten and "Heaven Help My Heart" and "Sorrento Moon" also charted. Sony wanted to break Tina into the US market, and at the time it was a priority for then boss Tommy Mottolla. They did an alternative video for "Chains", and gave "Don't Ask" a new album cover and included the track specially recorded for the US release called "Show Me Heaven". Sadly, "Chains" only peaked at #36 on the Hot 100, and Tina never ended up breaking the US market.
In 1997, Tina released the follow up to "Don't Ask". This album was "In Deep". There was so much hype locally surrounding the release of "In Deep", it became the first album to ever debut at #1 on the ARIA charts! Was another big album here for Tina, and had the huge hit "Burn". I believe "Burn" was later on covered by a country singer in the US and it went to #1 on your country charts. Anyway, this is the album Tina broke the French market with. They released it over there with a slightly revised tracklisting. The album sold 1 million copies in France. Tina is one of only 5 non-french artists to ever accomplish this. Tina also toured for this album.
In 2000, Tina sang the theme song, "The Flame", at the opening ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic games.
In 2001, a whole 4 years since "In Deep" Tina released "Just Me". The lead single "Soulmate #9" failed to ignite the charts, as did the album. Mainly due to poor promotion from Sony Australia, and a bad first single choice. When the 3rd single, the eclectic "Symphony of Life" was released, radio had already abandoned Tina. The uniqueness and quality of the song was undeniable, and without any major support, it went top ten on the ARIA charts, and became Tina's biggest hit from the cd, hence radio had no choice but to play it. "Symphony of Life" should have been the lead single.
She had a dance hit in the US as a vocalist on "Never (Past Tense)".
in late 2004 Tina released her Greatest Hits cd (fulfilling contract with Sony). It included two new tracks, including the beautiful single "Italian Love Song". Tina embarked on her first full scale national Australian tour since the "In Deep" tour.
In 2005 Tina signed to Sony music France. (why wouldnt she, its good to see she is getting love there). And released her first French album "Un Autre Univers" last December. the lead single AJALI went #3 in France, and #1 in Belgium. The second single will be "Je m'appelle Bagdad".
Oh, and last November Tina gave birth to her first child, son Gabriel Joseph, whose father is Tina's french b/f Vincent Mancini. Congrats Tina!
Anyway, sorry if I went a bit off topic! lol! But ya did ask if she is successful in Australia
BTW, what also makes Tina a REAL artist, is that she writes her own songs!!! And she has an amazing voice. The best voice to come out of Australia.
