Well the winner is going to be announced tomorrow night, and if you don't know already who is in the running for this prestigious prize here is the shortlist:
Arctic Monkeys, "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan, "Ballad Of The Broken Seas" Editors, "The Back Room" Guillemots, "Through The Windowpane" Richard Hawley, "Coles Corner" Hot Chip, "The Warning" Muse, "Black Holes And Revelations" Zoe Rahman, "Melting Pot" Lou Rhodes, "Beloved One" Scritti Politti, "White Bread, Black Beer" Sway, "This Is My Demo" Thom Yorke, "The Eraser"
Previous winners include: Franz Ferdinand, Gomez, Pulp, Portishead, Suede and Primal Scream.
My money is on Guillemots but to be fair it's anyone's game, the judges have been known to make odd choices and sometimes more mainstream choices...
The winner will be announced at a ceremony at a plush London hotel on September 5th, and will also be presented with a cheque for £20,000.

My money is on Guillemots but to be fair it's anyone's game, the judges have been known to make odd choices and sometimes more mainstream choices... That's the beauty of the Nationwide Mercury Prize. Thing is, most of the new artists who receive that award almost always disappear into their niche cults afterwards. Badly Drawn Boy, Gomez, Roni Size, Talvin Singh and Ms Dynamite are cases in point. Even Pulp couldn't manage to sustain their level of popularity after Different Class won the award.

Didn't Ms Dynamite get arrested for assaulting a cop? LOL

Well, I've only heard 6 of those albums, so my opinion isn't as educated as it could be. But the only one out of them that I truly like is Muse. I doubt they have a chance though.

Yes, and Beyonce is so underrated don't you think? Yes, I actually do. What does that have to do with the Arctic Monkeys though?

I'm pleased that the Arctic Monkeys won it for what is, undoubtably, a fantastic album with not one duff track on it. I agree with the judges that ignoring all the hype and going by the music from each album, theirs is probably the one that deserved to win, however I don't think they really needed the recognition and yet more praise. Personally I would have liked the either Guillemots or Editors to win as they were the albums I've most enjoyed (apart from the Arctic Monkeys debut). Arctic Monkeys are awesome. I don't know what this award is though en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_Music_Prize Considering the Arctic Monkeys turned up (and they don't like award ceremonies ) it's considered a highly prestigious award within the music industry.

LOL, thanks for that bellboys. "Did you have one of them bum chins done like off y'know Me, Myself and Irene" to the reporter. QUOTE of the month! I can't blame them for hating the British press (worst press in the world), they build you to knock you down (case in point: Robbie Williams) and when you're interviewed they ask the most dull questions. Another bit that made me laugh when asked why they didn't perform: "Muse didn't perform, ring them up, ask them why they didn't f**king perform". LOL It was interetsing near the end when they were asked what other records they were against they respected - and what they liked about Richard Hawleys album etc. oh, and how well they were doing on the download chart.. "Shakira beat us on downloads".. I like how they're interested in that stuff, very down to earth guys. ;D
