Released in late 1986, it became her one crossover hit. Shirley's vocals are very admirable here and some R&B stars could take note. She sings the verses in a soft, but soulful tone before breaking out into the belting, holler your head off vocals at the end. "As We Lay" is a great, timeless R&B ballad.. so timeless, Kelly Price broke the charts with it all over again in 2000.
