Before Robert Palmer did his spoken pop-rock version and before Mariah Carey did her by the numbers carbon copy, Cherrelle had a minor hit with the original version. It was released from 1984's Fragile. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were responsible for the production work, slightly reminiscent of Prince's "1999".
