I left the artist off the subject of this post, because the song has been covered so many times that there's no denying that it is one of the most respected soul compositions of the last 50 years -- one of so many excellent records that was helmed by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson.
Though the Diana Ross version was clearly the biggest hit of all the versions recorded, it appears that the original Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell arrangement is the one that has truly stood the test of time. It seems to be the one played most often on old school radio, and it is also the version that has been covered more often (most recently by Michael McDonald, IMO)
Thoughts on this record? Or whose version is your favorite?
Personally, I like Marvin & Tammi's version more than any other that I have ever heard.
But I think Diana Ross's version is a perfect example of what a great cover record should be: A completely new interpretation of a song, rather than a simple rehash of an old record.
