I love this song. They're pimping this on MTV between the shows.

I hope this is a pop hit!!
Is his new album a studio version of "Live..." or a whole new album?

I believe the new album is a little bit of both. Studio versions of the live album, but not a track-by-track replication.

This went for adds this week. I'm thinking he'll pull in around 15. We'll find out tomorrow.

#27 iTunes. I knew the gimmick would translate into downloads sooner or later.
Only +40 at Pop radio though, and below the Top 50. I'm surprised this isn't doing a little better here.

when i heard his name/saw his pic, i thought that he was some alt rocker type guy like bonnie prince billy or bright eyes, i had NO IDEA that they were some rapping reggae rabbis! im still undecided on the song however.

#11 and #52 iTunes. Expect a huge Hot 100 jump and probably increased attention from Pop.

What version is being played on radio? Is it the live or studio version of it?

What version is being played on radio? Is it the live or studio version of it? I've only heard the live version on the radio. MTv2 and Fuse switched to the studio version.

Wow this is awful, I'm saddened I wasted my time listening. Not to mention I saw him on Conan and was worried when I saw it was a white guy dressed like an Omish man...wtf?

That's the way Hasidic Jews dress. It's not a gimmick.
The fact that they're playing up the whole "ohmigod its a hasidic jew singing reggae" thing is the gimmick. And it's annoying.

The fact that they're playing up the whole "ohmigod its a hasidic jew singing reggae" thing is the gimmick. And it's annoying. Bingo. I also find it borderline offensive when people who are totally not affiliated with Jamaica in any way doing reggae. It's like... reggae was such a big part of expressing political and racial injustice through music in Jamaica and every now and then you get some white guy doing it just to have people get all hyped up and buy into the gimmick.

He's making money off of a culture that was created to express the opression of blacks in Jamaica. He's white and his label is fully aware of the controversy and hype that it creates. They're using it to get him a hit. I find it extremely offensive.

So basically he should be kept from singing certain kinds of music? And his record company can't use his obvious uniqueness to promote him? He obviously feels this type of music can convey his messages, and its not like he's singing about b*tches and hoes either.

He can do what he wants and I can find it offensive. Does he have the experiences that most traditional reggae singers (I'm sure he and his family members get shot daily in the streets by government officials) have to do this kind of music? No. But he's doing it anyway, and instead of even trying to promote reggae itself.. he and his label are saying "LOOK I'M WHITE AND I DO REGGAE". That's what I find offensive.

Every culture has it's own form of music. Every culture has history told through music. But over time, the purpose of the music evolves and becomes more famous. Reggae music has reached audiences around the world, and it's influenced other artists everywhere. That's not offensive, that's very complimentary. Most Jamaicans that I know are completely flattered by it and view it with a sense of pride. And to be honest, Matisyahu is using reggae closer to it's original roots than most people. He's making statement about society. If I were one of the reggae greats of yesterday, I'd be far more offended by Beenie Man's tasteless lyrics than by Matisyahu's obvious reggae influences.

Beenie Man is dancehall though. This is traditional reggae.
