HEAT FOR 'CHEATS': Only 20 songs in the history of the Hot 100 have had a longer chart run than Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats" (Arista), which slides 24-28 in its 51st chart week. It's the longest run for a charted title since "How to Save a Life" by the Fray completed its run at 58 weeks.

WILL 'BEFORE' BE FIVE: Four short weeks ago, Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats" (Arista) was sitting just outside the top 20 longest-charting songs in the history of the Hot 100. Now, "Cheats" is in the top 10, and closing in on a berth in the top five.

The top 10 is actually a top 12, thanks to four songs being tied for ninth place. One of those songs is "Cheats," which dips 32-39 in its 55th week. Next week, "Cheats" will break away from that four-way tie and be level with singles by Paula Cole and Faith Hill. If "Cheats" can last another four weeks after that, it will be one of only five songs to remain on the Hot 100 for 60 weeks or longer.

"Cheats" remains strong in radio spins, slipping 19-21 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart, an indication that it still has the power to remain in the upper half of the Hot 100, where it is safe from elimination.

If it does, it will become the longest-running song in the 49-year history of this chart. "Cheats" reaches a plateau this week, rising 42-40 in its 60th chart week. It is only the fifth song to stay on the chart for 60 weeks or more.
Since the single has been rebounding the last couple of weeks, due to heavy recurrent airplay at multiple formats and continued sales of digital downloads, it seems destined to move into fourth place next week when it passes "Macarena" by Los Del Rio. In two weeks, Underwood will be tied with Lifehouse for third place. In six weeks, Underwood will have second place all to herself, and in 10 weeks she will surpass LeAnn Rimes' 69-week chart run with "How Do I Live."

Carrie is also catapulted into third place among the longest-running songs in this chart's 49 1/2-year history. 21ST CENTURY CHAMP: I've been following the chart run of Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats" (Arista) on the Hot 100 on almost a weekly basis, because every week there's something new to report, and this week is no exception.

"Cheats" rebounds 44-43 in its 63rd week on the singles chart. That replaces "You and Me" by Lifehouse as the longest-running song of the 21st century. "Cheats" now has the third-longest chart run of all time.

Underwood could still surpass the top two longevity champs, although her chances are dimming. The problem? Some of her airplay strength is coming from Adult Contemporary radio, a format that turns to holiday music at this time of the year.

A substantial drop in AC spins could force the single to fall below No. 50, which would cause removal of the single to the recurrent chart.
