You don't want her to get popular? lol She was "mine," and now I'm just the guy who likes the newest VH-1 You Oughta Know artist.

There's nothing wrong with that. The mentality that your favorite artist becoming popular somehow detracts from them in any way is outrageous.

I just really dislike the people who claim certain artists they only know from VH1 or MTV as their favorite artists ever. A lot of people my age get their exposure to new music from those channels, and everyone just becomes a clone with the same music taste. I know it's juvenile and selfish, but it's the way I feel.

I think the great thing about VH1 or MTV or whatever is that they give people like Amy Winehouse the chance to reach a huge audience and allow them to expand further as an artist, because more money means more opportunities to experiment, and more opportunities to reach people like you and me. I certainly credit those channels with giving me exposure to all the artists and bands I love myself, whether it be The White Stripes or Pink. Without those channels I wouldn't have had the opportunity to enjoy and be inspired by them. I certainly don't have the time or energy to hunt down obscure indie bands on the internet and limit myself to that simply because I know the guy next door won't be into them. I guess I just look at the whole thing as something positive as opposed to an issue of making everyone clones.

I see what you're saying, and I should have specified. The people I have problems with are the ones who hear the one single being played on television, then claim that that band/artist is one of their all-time favorite bands/artists. I'm sure this doesn't happen as much when you're older, but I see loads of people now claiming to love Amy after seeing the "Rehab" video or the Shins after seeing Garden State. I have no problem with people claiming artists after they've listened to the album, but it just bothers me when people like an artist based on a limited listening experience.

I definitely understand what you're saying, but I find it more annoying when people try so hard to only like unknown artists and deny liking anything that's a commercial success. I know so many people who say things like "Oh I love Fall Out Boy, but only their old stuff, none of the stuff that's on the radio".

Exactly... I just discovered Amy during this album.... and I have friends that are like... I loved her since Frank..... Just because she's barely starting to see success now with this album, doesn't make me any less of a fan than those that discovered her back when Frank was out...
And to this day, I'm out there promoting songs/artists that I love that are maybe somewhat new (just like the rest of you on here), that just really need to be out there..... I did that with Gnarls, Arctic, and now Amy. Maybe they are not as indie or unknown from the gate as what you're talking about... but, there's nothing wrong with people suddenly starting to like an artist on first listen.
Its about tastes, not time investments.

Yes! Finally! I just really want radio to speed up with this because I know they're going to play it a lot eventually... and I don't want to be tired of it before they even start.

Its about tastes, not time investments. Yeah and not only that, but Amy is really famous in the UK and not being close to indie at all. Over there she's pretty much mainstream. So if anything, worrying about her reaching a large audience is a moot point because she's already become a well-known pop artist in the UK.

LOL I know. All of Alex's "indie" artists are absolutely massive, commercial, and mainstream... just somewhere else. Which is cool if that's what he likes. It's just... still really commercial.

They are not my "indie" artists by any means. I joke around with that term because it is massively overused today. I have the artists I like, most from different countries, because I often feel like US radio/television/press ruins them. I like the artists I do because I'm not force fed them from MTV/VH-1/radio to the point of overexposure. That's why I sometimes dislike it when artists I've been liking for a while get shown on television or whatever because I fear that, if they catch on, I will grow sick of them. That's why I try not to listen to radio or watch the videos on television.

I'm starting to wonder if #1 on the Hot 100 is a possibility. She's definitely going to beat her #7 UK peak here in the US though. "Rehab" is even bigger here than it was back at home for her.
