Rihanna's single sales have still been really good. It's not like the label is paying to make her a star and no one cares.
I just think this is a really stupid argument. Record labels obviously do whatever they can in their power to make their artists successful. If it means paying for more outside writers and producers, and they're happy with the results that it returns, then so be it.

Rihanna's single sales are always good for 3 or 4 weeks because her label consistently waits 4 months to release her songs to iTunes. Even that's manipulated. lol "Break It Off" had big first week sales and was almost gone after a month.
Ne-Yo, her labelmate, had more hit singles and sold more albums with his debut than Rihanna ever did with one album. Yet, far less money is spent by Def Jam on his album production AND his promotion.
All I'm saying is the execs at Def Jam are ride or die for Rihanna. More so than records execs usually are for their artists. Period. I'm not saying there's anything wrong about it. I'm just saying that's how it is for her.

maybe they think she has more potential as a singer than Ne-Yo..because i see ne-yo more as a writer than a singer. And the whole holding the single release is totally valid because they don't pay consumers to buy the single.

And the whole holding the single release is totally valid because they don't pay consumers to buy the single. I didn't say it's not valid. I'm just pointing out that her sales aren't all that great beyond the first few weeks. Most of her singles don't have staying power with sales. A strong first week of sales is going to be a given if it's not available for most of its run at radio. That creates built-in demand. It has to do with economics as much as it does with music.

so what if the sales are great just in their first weeks? her singles sales are still great...just like an album that opens with 800k and ends up selling like 2 million copies it still sold that amount of copies. I don't know where you're trying to go with your point.

I knew there would have to be an urban mix. It should be interesting with Eve.

Just saw a brief interview with Rihanna "from the set of her new video". She still has the short hair, was wearing tons of cheap looking 'gold' bling (mainly bracelets) and sitting infront of an old banger painted gold (even the windows). Looks good then

Wow already climbing up the charts. Scary. When the US is into an artist they really get into them, regardless of whatever they release.e

Heard this on Radio 1 as her 'next single' Maybe UK is getting the same single as the US, and that other song is just for continental Europe? I don't know but that tactic has been done before.

She said that before she shot a video for "Don't Stop The Music." I think it was just decided a few weeks ago to release that in Europe.
