SEAN BY ME: "Stand by Me" is one of the classic songs of the 20th century. It has charted on The Billboard Hot 100 by eight different artists, and that's not counting the sampling of this evergreen in Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls" (Beluga Heights/Epic), the single that takes a 23-1 warp speed jump this week.

That 22-point move writes new chapters in chart history, first by creating the longest span of No. 1 hits for songwriters in the rock era. Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's first No. 1 on the Billboard pop singles chart was Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog," which claimed pole position the week of Aug. 18, 1956. That gives Leiber and Stoller a span of No. 1 hits that is now stretched to one week shy of 51 years. Until this week, the longest rock-era span of No. 1 hits for a songwriter on the Billboard pop singles chart was 38 years, nine months and one week, a record held by the late Lincoln Chase, best known for writing Shirley Ellis' 1964 hit, "The Name Game." Chase's credit appears on Bert Kaempfert's "Wonderland by Night," No. 1 in January 1961, and Mariah Carey and Jay-Z's "Heartbreaker," No. 1 in October 1999.

The advancement of "Beautiful Girls" also gives Leiber and Stoller the longest gap between No. 1 hits in the rock era. They were last on top of the Hot 100 just over 48 years ago. Wilbert Harrison covered Leiber and Stoller's 1952 song "Kansas City" and his version of the song had a two-week reign in May 1959.

"Beautiful Girls" is the fifth No. 1 on the pop singles chart for Leiber and Stoller. Their other chart-toppers are:

"Hound Dog," Elvis Presley, 11 weeks (1956)
"Jailhouse Rock" / "Treat Me Nice," Elvis Presley, seven weeks (1957)

"Don't," Elvis Presley, five weeks (1958)
"Kansas City," Wilbert Harrison, two weeks (1959)

"Beautiful Girls" is the initial No. 1 on the pop singles chart for (songwriter) Ben E. King, who first charted on the Hot 100 as a member of the Drifters in 1959. I don't know any other songwriter who first went to No. 1 48 years after making his chart debut.

There is some irony in that "Stand by Me" was never a No. 1 hit on its own. It took someone sampling the song to send it up to the penthouse. The timeless tune has been a top 10 hit twice for King, first when originally released and then again when the movie "Stand by Me" was a box office hit. "Beautiful Girls" is the first chart entry for Miami-born Sean Kingston. The 17-year-old is not the youngest male solo artist to top the Hot 100 in the last couple of years; Chris Brown was 16 when he went to No. 1 with "Run It!" in November 2005. But Kingston is the first artist born in the '90s to have a No. 1 song on this chart. The teen's date of birth is Feb. 3, 1990.

A final note about "Beautiful Girls" and Leiber and Stoller: as reported in Chart Beat a few weeks ago, the legendary writing team had its first No. 1 on a Billboard chart in the spring of 1953 when Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton ruled the R&B singles chart for six weeks with the original recording of "Hound Dog." That means Kingston's chart success has expanded Leiber and Stoller's career chart span of No. 1 hits to 54 years.

I don't think I know that original though. EVERYONE knows "Stand By Me" though. It's probably one of the Top 10 most famous songs of all time.

Sean Kingston totally seemed like a one hit wonder to me too. f**k. I hate when people who don't deserve it become really successful.
