Are you talking about "carrying the vocal torch" or are you talking about pop hits? 2 totally different concepts. if you are talking about great vocalists, pop hits and album sales are irrelevant. And all the women listed are far superior singers to Adele and Alicia keys. They are two different thing. I agree with that. What I'm talking about are those rare artists who manage to do both at the same time.

He (they) have had at least 3 albums before Saturday's=Youth, which We Own the Sky appears on. No idea that M83's has had that much material already. Wow. I'll check that out. I actually love it when French artists who typically sing in English will do something in French too. (I'm still hoping for a Phoenix song in French or half/half lol ) Nice- what are your all time three favorites then?

Adele I'd agree with, Alicia not so much. She whines in too many of her songs. I think most of the general population would say that the big "voices" are Christina/Clarkson/Underwood/JHud. Christina hasn't had a hit in years so I wouldn't call her current, though I do think she got her profile up enough where she might have a comeback with her next album. Still- she has a very polarizing voice. Many people say she screams rather than sings. Kelly- maybe she can hit the notes but her songs sound like typical Dr. Luke pop songs and rarely focus on her belting. Underwood- I don't think the general public even knows more than one song by her. She's a huge Country star, but that also widely limits her audience. Jennifer- I agree on the voice but she's never on the charts. She's yet to have a Pop hit and she's not even had more than a few Urban hits, none of which are chart topping. Alicia reminds me of the old time divas because she takes her time between albums and when she comes back, it's with her signature style and you can tell she went into the studio to make songs rather than hits. The hits just happen (and sometimes don't). I think Adele will be that type of artist too. I would probably also put Beyonce in this group.

Today I think Adele and Alicia Keys kind of carry the torch for vocal talent Absolutely not. Who would you say then? Ciara? Rihanna? Ke$ha?

What a waste on the most extensive promo I've ever seen for a single. To think of how much they put into making this a hit and it's going to fall like a brick after two weeks. Did they even bother doing test research before selecting such a bland song as a lead single?

Having said that, "We Own the Sky" is even better than "Midnight City." It's from his debut but I recently discovered it and can't stop listening.

I've heard the live Grammy performance on the radio twice already.
It would be in very poor taste if she recorded her own version and released it this week. I doubt she would.

What are some of the other highlights on his album? I must have previewed a few tracks so many times but can't find another standout...

It's the biggest hit from the album in the UK I believe. That's probably why they chose it.

hot but not lead single material IMO I kind of agree. I think it's too slow for Pop and too electro for Urban, so I don't know where it would fit at radio. I'd love it if it defied all of that and became a hit though.

The thing is you could tell Mariah and Whitney apart from each other and other artists. They had unique and obvious talent. You heard them sing and you KNEW why they were signed. Their contemporaries that had less vocal talent such as Madonna and Janet made up for it with creativity and innovation. That's why I excuse Lady Gaga, because I think even though she's not special vocally, she brings extra thought with her music.
There were successful singers in the Katy/Rihanna family of singers back then too (Paula Abdul comes to mind) but I think they were less common and definitely less dominant. Today I think Adele and Alicia Keys kind of carry the torch for vocal talent, and they take their time between albums to try to put out albums that are just good without gimmicks. When they go into a recording studio, it's to make music... it's not to try to make quick cheap hits.

i think you are comparing two completely different kind of singers...whitney was about sad ballads most of the time, while katy' songs are about having fun and they are not very deep and i think she does a great job...she sure expresses "fun" when she sings...i am not saying at all they are on the same level, but i don't think it's TERRIBLE to have katy at #1 on itunes when she makes good pop records IN GENERAL(not the case of this song) and in the end, for the first time after two singles her sales are legit, she's not manipulating itunes this time. I agree to an extent and I enjoyed "California Gurls" and "Teenage Dream" for that reason, but after a string of songs that sound almost identical and seem to be getting lazier and lazier I'm just really sick of her. The fact that she's not uniquely talented makes that amplified.
