"La Tortura" also never went for adds. I'm pretty sure it would've gone Top 20 if it did.

"La Tortura" also never went for adds. What!! Really! Well, actually, I never really understood what "going for adds" actually means. Is it when the record label sends out promos to certain radio stations and "allow" them to play it?

I don't know why, but I always thought "La Tortura" was a pop hit. Didn't Z100 plaid it a lot. And didn't Shakira said at the RMA "it's great to have a Spanish song played in the USA?" or something like that. Me too. It WAS played a hell of a lot in certain markets...lol Miami is probably the only place with a pop station who ranked "La Tortura" above "Behind These Hazel Eyes" on their year end countdown however, many markets likely didn't play it at all because to them an all-Spanish song could be too risky, hence its low charting. So do I. It's crap. I saw a clip of Wyclef on the news, and he was doing some event at a cell phone store, where he was performing "Hips Don't Lie" with a recorded Shakira voice from the stereo. it was kinda pathetic.

I don't like this song, it's just a rip-off of 'La Tortura' for me.

it's not even a rip-off of "La Tortura" it's a remake of another song which is even worse

I don't know I may be wrong but I'm sure Sony is using some big payola here.

well this song is catchy and shakira wanted a hit so bad so that's why she recorded this so if they're using payola they shouldn't really care 'cause it's a hit and that's what they wanted

I don't know I may be wrong but I'm sure Sony is using some big payola here. I think the spike in the bullet has a lot to do with her American Idol appearance because that's when it started exploding and it makes a lot of sense. All you have to do is appear on American Idol and all the preteens go nuts.

I mean, Shakira was flopping before this, it's weird how the radio stations were so open and willing to play this....
But I don't know it's just an opnion.

Don't Bother flopped but La Tortura did really well for a Spanish song. The U.S. prefers Shakira dance songs, which Hips Don't Lie fits perfectly. I am not surprised this song is doing well and I doubt there is any payola involved. The song fits today's radio environment perfectly, has a great video and she's done crazy promotion for the song.
I'd say this is similar to Gwen Stefani getting a huge hit with "Hollaback Girl" after the great "What are you waiting for" flopped (#47 on Hot 100).

But before Hollaback Girl, Gwen had a moderate hit with ''Rich Girl''. But nevermind.

rich girl went all the way to number 7 on the hot100 so it was a hit

I've even seen music journalists forget about "Rich Girl". I guess it fell between the monster flop and monster smash so people just forget all about it.

Gee guys, this forum is so harsh. The song was a predicted hit from the very begginning. It got a Billboard Hit Predictor score on its first week. The song has had great research (Top 10 ) , it has been #1 request on most major stations (NY, L.A, Miami, Boston, etc). It has had major promotion for the last two weeks. Why is so surprising that the song is reacting the way it is reacting. ( And just to suggest payola is almost hating) By the way the album has just reacted as well , it comes back to the Top 10 this week at #6 with 80K units sold.

I don't think its payola. I'm not surprised this is a hit at all. What bothers me about this song is pretty much what Captain Oats referenced. It's such a desperate attempt at a hit. It's not even one of her better songs. La Tortura redux in every way. I love Shakira and its just icky to me to see her catering so heavily to this market. It's not like I consider her to be some indie goddess but this album is making her appear like a tart when in reality she couldn't be farther from that.

My mom loves this song. She cranked it up when she was driving me to school so everyone could hear it when I got out of the car lol.
It's such a great song. Definitely one of Shakira's best singles.

As far as her English singles, I put this and "Don't Bother" easily at the top. If I compared this to her Spanish singles, it would be at the very bottom.

But when she releases mature songs out to radio (ala Don't Bother) they flop. She's not gonna just watch herself flop by releasing mature songs when she knows it's gonna bomb. I know it seems desperate, but it's the only way she'll get a hit.

I know it seems desperate, but it's the only way she'll get a hit. That's true, but that's also not really the point. Yeah, she's better off at radio when she releases upbeat singles. But, she's enough of an artist and a visionary where she could come up with her own lyrics, melody, well... her own song. But this is a carbon copy or a flop from a few years ago. Shakira's version improves upon it, but it is the same song nonetheless.

Exactly, I don't buy that excuse with not only Shakira but any artist in general that she has to dumb herself or cater to people to get a hit. I think she is creative and intelligent enough to find a way to make her style work in a song. She better watch herself she doesn't want to pigeonhole herself and only be able to get Americans interested in her for only her Latin sounding uptempos.
