I HATE HATE HATE myself for saying this, because a) Chris Brown is a deplorable human being and b) this musical and lyrical trend is BEYOND played out, but...I really like this song now. The "Whoa-WHOOOOOA" makes it for me.

A month removed from my first review, I'm realizing I wasn't nearly harsh enough. I can't even soldier through the first 10 seconds. I can usually overlook bad lyrics, but these are SO cliche-ridden that they literally make me cringe. "The One That Got Away" wasn't a favorite of mine, but at least there was some real emotion there. A ninth grader could have written these lyrics.
Hell, the song's not even catchy. I've enjoyed most of Katy's releases, but all of the things her critics accuse her of live in this single.

Just entered the Top 20 at Hot AC. This and Snow Patrol are my two favorite songs at radio right now. The instrumentation is great, and the way the bridge explodes absolutely makes the song. Matt deserves to be a HAC staple.

Yep, just like that...let the crossover begin. It picked up other solid adds in Charlotte (Channel 96-1), DC (Hot 99-5), Orlando (XL 1067) and Columbus (WNCI).

+687 bullet at Urban
At this point, this era is so far beyond ridiculous that it's almost surreal. The worst part of BC smashing is that I'm sure Rihanna will feel 100% validated and rub it in IDJ's faces for opposing the remix and release.

I like this more than I thought I would, but I agree. No more of this downtempo coffee-house material.

Well, in fairness, it doesn't appear they had much say-so over this remix's release. Having said that, I agree that this era is a total wreck. Amazing to think that what an album packed with no-brainer hits could become such a clusterf**k.

Almost bulletless at #19. Justice is served. I know this expression gets thrown around a lot, but this is literally one of the worst songs I've EVER heard. The chorus actually sounds like someone vomiting

Jay brought Rita to Z100 and KTU this week for a surprise world premiere of this song, and the two even did a toast with Tom Poleman and Sharon Dastur (Clear Channel's President of Nat'l Programming and Z100's PD, respectively).
Wonder if Jay-Z's trying to send a message to RiRi...

The only way this group could be more annoying is if... wait, let me think........nope, that's literally the most annoying collection of "artists" conceivable.

How did no one realize this needed to be a full song? I'm wishing they didn't record a full version now. If I had only known.

Just made another horrifying realization. The original and remix feature Rihanna singing the lyric "I know you wanna bite this." You might recall from the assault police report that Chris bit Rihanna's fingers and ear The lack of self-awareness they're exhibiting is startling, to say the very least.

Both duets are highly distasteful, but "Birthday Cake" takes it to another level. The fact that she's outright saying that Chris can f**k her even after violently abusing her is downright shameful. The lasciviousness of the other lyrics is the cherry on top - or should I say, the icing on the cake.

I'm honestly at a loss. I wouldn't call myself a Rihanna stan/lamb, but she's released some of my favorite pop records of the last five years...she's probably become my favorite pop female in the industry. So from that vantage point, I don't want her career to crumble.
That being said, I'm totally disgusted not only by these two collaborations, but her attitude and all of the leadup to this mess. By that token, I'd love to see some backlash come her way.
This will go down as a turning point in her career, and not a positive one. She has some BAD - no, make that HORIRBLE - publicity coming her way. I'm still in disbelief that her team somehow allowed this to transpire.

Are you talking about "carrying the vocal torch" or are you talking about pop hits? 2 totally different concepts. if you are talking about great vocalists, pop hits and album sales are irrelevant. And all the women listed are far superior singers to Adele and Alicia keys. Your latter point is certainly open to interpretation, but "carrying the vocal torch" doesn't only mean being the best vocalist. It also means being the most visible representative(s) for true vocal ability to mainstream audiences. If no one's actually hearing your vocal prowess - meaning, if no one's buying your albums or hearing you on the radio - then how can you possibly be "carrying the torch?" As for who's better...the four singers listed are all certainly talented, but a little more invested than Adele in hitting the so-called "glory notes." Adele's delivery is more soulful than Christina and Carrie. The best approach is entirely a matter of personal preference. Either way, I think we can all agree that Katy Perry doesn't belong on this list. LOL

Eek...down to #32 on iTunes, and most of the Whitney and Grammy material has fallen below her now It will be interesting to see how/if airplay rebounds. If not, Madonna might have her very own "Not Myself Tonight."

This song initially leaked way back in 2010 when the album first came out, so it's not "rush recorded." And she's far from the first artist to re-release a record for the sake of making more money, so I'm really not sure where the vehement hatred is coming from. This. This album kind of earned a re-release. Unlike many albums that get rereleased because they forgot to put hits on them ::coughushercough:: I don't blame her label. Radio and music buyers are eating Katy and stuff like "Part Of Me" up. The re-release and single are perfect business decisions and I'd honestly make the same ones if I were in the label's executive office. But that doesn't mean I, the consumer, am going to sit here and praise her musicality when she's really just releasing more generic crap. If she used this re-release to explore a different musical sound, I might be a bit more impressed.

This is one of the best-managed album eras of the past decade. The single choices, timing, promo and long-term strategy have all been absolutely perfect. Watch and learn, Team Rihanna...
